Our Chairman, Roger Helmer MEP, wrote a letter to the editor emphasising the widely held eurosceptic opinion in Britain, which is not represented by the current government's actions. The British people have been unable to have their say over our relations with Europe.
Dear Sir,
You report (Aug 23rd) that in this year's euro elections, over 25% of voters supported eurosceptic parties. But you did not include the Conservative Party.
We Conservatives are a broadly eurosceptic party. As my colleague Dan Hannan MEP says, "The EU is making us poorer, and less democratic, and less free". Most Conservatives would prefer the Common Market we voted for in 1975, rather than the political union now being foisted on us. Many agree with me that we should be Better Off Out (www.tfa.net/betteroffout). Add in Conservative voters, and it's clear that a substantial majority of voters supported eurosceptic parties last June.
It is scandalous that Labour's failed negotiations on the British rebate have increased our direct EU budget contributions from £4 billion to £6 billion, yet this is only a tiny fraction of the real cost of EU membership. Credible estimates of the total cost, of which the largest element is regulatory costs, suggest a figure of £120 billion, or around £2000 a year for every man, woman and child in the country.
Yours faithfully,
ROGER HELMER MEP
