Should we protest Donald Trump?

The following article is by Dr Timothy Tomkinson, a doctor currently working in the NHS. 

The other day I found myself watching Owen Jones on Good Morning Britain, as he discussed whether or not we should protest the visit of Donald Trump to the UK. By way of justification for this he mentioned, on this occasion and others, the fact that protesting is “a proud British tradition”.

At face value he is correct. Few people dispute the right to free assembly and free protest, and certainly it is perfectly reasonable to make one’s voice heard about an issue strongly felt. There are plenty of things to dislike about Donald Trump (as with many international leaders), but a there are three reasons we should feel some unease at this stance:

The pay gap

The NHS is a very interesting prism through which to view the recent discussion on the gender wage gap.

Language matters, and a lot of the statistics quoted are misleading to the point of falsehood. Listening to Stellar Creasy last week, she referenced an unknown hospital where “for every fifty nine pence a woman earns, a man earns a pound”

The Curious Case of Lauren Southern

The following article is by Dr Timothy Tomkinson, a doctor currently working in the NHS. 

I wrote to my MP the other week for the first time in my life. I did so on behalf of someone with whom I have little in common, and whose actions I don’t condone.

Three weeks ago, the YouTuber Lauren Southern was detained whilst trying to enter the UK. She was held under anti-terror legislation, Schedule 7, and finally she was given a ban from the UK for previously handing out leaflets in Luton claiming “Allah is gay”. If this is true, then this is a bizarre decision and a concerning one.
